Tenfold Acceleration Needed in Coal Transition

To get on track with climate goals, the world needs to increase its pace of coal phaseout tenfold, researchers concluded. This would require shutting down more than 360 medium-sized coal plants annually and canceling every coal-fired power plant currently in development worldwide.

The report underscores that while technological solutions and policy frameworks exist, implementation remains the critical barrier. With the window for effective action narrowing, analysts suggest that the coming years will determine whether humanity can accelerate climate progress sufficiently to avoid the most severe consequences of global warming.
