According to The Verge, Google is making it easier for Gemini users to detect AI-generated content starting today. You can now use the Gemini app to determine if an image was created or edited by a Google AI tool simply by asking “Is this AI-generated?” While the initial launch is limited to images, Google says verification of video and audio will come “soon.” The company also intends to expand this functionality beyond the Gemini app into Search. More importantly, Google plans to extend verification to support industry-wide C2PA content credentials, which would make it possible to detect content from a wider variety of AI tools including OpenAI’s Sora.
Why this matters
Here’s the thing – we’re drowning in AI-generated content, and nobody knows what’s real anymore. Google‘s approach is smart because they’re starting with what they can actually verify: their own stuff. The initial image verification uses SynthID, Google’s invisible AI watermarking technology.
