Other instances, like 11 Bit Studios using AI for translation in The Alters and Embark clarifying its use of machine learning in Arc Raiders, led to fan condemnation over a lack of transparency.
The player backlash is real and intense
Here’s the thing: gamers aren’t just skeptical, they’re hostile. And you can’t really blame them. AI has been like this background radiation of bad vibes in 2025—driving up PC RAM prices, flooding the web with misinformation, and now potentially “poisoning” their games. When a beloved studio like Larian even mentions using AI in early exploration, it triggers a firestorm that requires a public clarification. Or when a Steam page vaguely mentions “AI” without specifying it’s for robot movement, leading to accusations and pushback. Inside the industry, it’s a tool with caveats
So while players see a bogeyman, many developers see… a very buggy power tool. The corporate vision at GDC was all about efficiency. Xbox talked about baking AI into developer tools to speed up workflows. Razer showed off a QA assistant that could auto-file bug reports, claiming it could cut QA time in half—while stressing it’s a “multiplier,” not a replacer. There were talks about using LLMs to sift through massive asset libraries. Sounds great, right?
But the downsides were right there in the open. A 2K exec told a story about AI code that turned a 3-day task into minutes of work… followed by three days of fixing the AI’s mess. The panel’s conclusion was telling: “A machine cannot do it, a tool cannot do it. Humans have to invest.” Basically, the tech is promising but wildly unreliable and ethically fraught. It’s a mixed bag that can accelerate some tasks while creating massive new problems in validation and bias.
The future is assistants and ambiguity
Where does this go? The big push from companies like Microsoft is towards AI as an in-game assistant. Their Gaming Copilot, now in beta, is pitched as a smart guide that can offer tips in games like Overwatch. The argument is that players already use YouTube guides, so why not bake that help directly into the experience? Razer had a similar pitch. But will players accept it, or see it as an intrusive cheat? We don’t know yet—there aren’t enough titles using it to gauge reaction.
The more immediate future, sadly, is probably more of the same ambiguity and backlash. There’s no standard for disclosure. No consensus on what’s an acceptable use (QA tools? concept brainstorming?) versus what’s toxic (final art? narrative?). Until the industry figures out how to be transparent and ethical—and maybe even regulate itself—this cycle of secret use, player discovery, and public outrage is going to be the norm. And that’s a lousy way to make or play games.
